Batavia Riverwalk Boardwalk Project Eyes 2014 Completion
Batavia, Illinois: The Batavia Parks Foundation Riverwalk Boardwalk renovation project is eyeing the finish line. Volunteers completed demolition and plank installation during their 2013 work season. Parks Foundation President, Steven McKenna, also the project manager, talks about the project, “We made great progress last year and look forward to completing the railings, overlook, electric and site amenities to finish the boardwalk’s new look.”
The original Batavia Riverwalk boardwalk, built in the mid 1990’s, was at the end of its useful life and was replaced with Moisture Shield, a composite wood product (decking) and metal infill panels (railings). The new design both maximizes the natural beauty of the wetlands area and takes advantage of newer technologies. The rendering, history of the Riverwalk, volunteer information and donation opportunities are available at www.purchaseaplank.com.
Volunteer groups of 5-12 adults and skilled tradespersons are needed to assist with work this season. Volunteers should be of high school age or older and able to work one Saturday morning from 7:45 am until at least Noon to qualify as a “Group of the Week.” Groups interested should contact coordinator Sharon Mitchell at email@example.com to schedule a Saturday date, June through mid September. Individuals wanting to assist can just show up Saturday mornings at 9 am starting on March 29 (weather depending) at the boardwalk with work gloves. Also needed are snack break volunteers to provide a mid-morning snack for the workers. Individuals or restaurants wishing to sign up to provide snacks for about a dozen volunteers should contact Barb Brady at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Britta McKenna issues a last call to help fund the boardwalk, “We encourage donations of any size to help finish up the project.” She explains, “The deadline for major donor gifts to be included in the major donor plaque is May 31, 2014.” Gifts can be made online at www.purchaseaplank.com or by sending a check made out to “Batavia Parks Foundation” to Batavia Park District, 327 W. Wilson St., Batavia, IL 60510 with Boardwalk in the memo. The project has raised $147,080 towards a goal of $150,000 as of March 24, 2014.
Donations of volunteer time and community donations are needed to assure success of the project. For more information, visit the project website at www.purchaseaplank.com and “Like” the Facebook page, “Batavia Riverwalk Boardwalk Renovation” to follow progress and ongoing needs.
